National Sikh Heroes
AMRITSAR SAHIB (KP) - The Sikh Nation honored the sacrifices of their National Heroes, Shaheed Sardar Beant Singh and Satwant Singh who brought Indira Gandhi to justice on October 31st, 1984 for authorizing the brutal military assault on Sri Darbar Sahib complex, and dozens of other Sikh Gurdwaras across Punjab in which thousands of innocent Sikh men, women, and children were killed.
Sikh organization gathered at Sri Akal Takht Sahib during the conclusion of Sri Akhand Patth Sahib that was performed in the memory of these great martyrs. On the occasion, Sardar Satwant Singh’s brother, Bhai Waryam Singh Agwan, was honored with a siropo by the Sikh organizations.
On October 31st 1984, Indira Gandhi’s own personal bodyguards, Sardar Beant Singh and Satwant Singh assassinated the Indian prime minster to avenge the military army operation in June.
After the assassination, Sardar Beant Singh was shot dead on the scene by other security personnel while the inured Sardar Satwant Singh was apprehended amidst a struggle. On January of 1989, Sardar Satwant Singh was executed along with Beant Singh’s uncle, Sardar Kehar Singh who was convicted of being a co-conspirator in the shooting.
The Shaheedees of Sardars Beant Singh, Satwant Singh, and Kehar Singh are annually observed by the Sikh community worldwide and highest regards are given to those great national martyrs.
