Chapter 2

The next day Shankar got charity from Prashan Raaj’s house and brought him back along with himself.

Prashan Raaj: Sat Kartar, Sat Kartar.

Bhangar: Welcome Prashan Raaj, please have a seat.

While Bhangar Naath was welcoming Prashan Raaj, other yogis also came.

Gopi: So you have made it here Pandit Prashan Raaj Ji? You are most welcome.

Prashan Raaj: Sat Kartar! Sat Kartar! Greetings!

Bhangar: Blessings. Is everything alright?

Prashan: [everything is ok] with your blessings.

Bhangar: Let us bring our discussions to life again. The truth is that Guroo Nanak was a enlightened soul. His departure is a misfortune for the sangat. He left his beloved ones in such a short period and attained liberation.

Prashan: Guroo Ji preached to stay in hukam (will). He is the one who not only preached to live in hukam but also understood it. Guroo Ji was completely separate from ego, ignorance and worries. (With tears) Dhan Guroo Nanak!

Bhangar: Sangat must be getting impatient (in Guroo Ji’s absence).

Prashan: Just the way a fish would feel without water

Bhangar: His path was that of love and devotion, and separation of loved ones results in sadness, Prashan Raaj Ji! How did he leave after instilling so much love in sangat’s heart and by attaching so many to Vaaheguroo’s meditation. Shiv, Shiv, Shiv. Did he do anything to upkeep his beloved ones by establishing anyone like himself?

Prashan: He enlightened Guroo Angad Dey Ji by residing himself in his heart.

Bhangar: Not Sri Chand?

Prashan: No.

Bhangar: And who is this person? His name, praise or glory hasn’t been heard in past.

Prashan: [He is] Sri Lehna Ji. Feroo kay’s (name of a village) tavern owner’s son. But I doubt that you have had his sight.

Bhangar: Oh, Lehna Ji! The one who came in Guroo Nanak’s sanctuary just a few years ago. His devotional Guroo worship is heard to be of excellence. So his named got changed, Angad? … (thinking) What does Angad mean?

Prashan: One who has renounced the attachment to his body in respect to Lord’s love is [called] Angad. ‘Ang’ – limb/body; ‘ad’ - give up: Giving up affection of your body.

Bhangar: You are a pandit so you [must] have given the correct meanings. I thought that ‘Angaj’ and ‘Angad’ meant the same, whose meaning is ‘son’. Sri Lehna Ji became Guroo’s son, and got titled as Angad.

Prashan: As you say! You are an elder yogi, so all that you say must be correct.

Bhangar: It wasn’t an easy deal to amaze Guroo Nanak. In reality, Sri Lehni Ji forsake himself to realize God’s existence. Thus Guroo Nanak was pleased at him and blessed him with his own status.

Prashan: Yes, Guroo Angad Ji had renounced ego in such a way that there wasn’t any personal self left in him, it was only and only Guroo Nanak and he became one with Guroo Ji. His soul was to become one with Guroo Nanak, but it seems like that physically Guroo Angad has turned into Guroo Nanak aswell.

Yogi ‘Sarna’ who was sitting near by spoke up.

Sarna: How did Guroo Nanak pass his position? In some new and rare way? Just like he was himself and how his path was?

Prashan: An extraordinary scheme; he bowed in front of Guru Angad along with offering 5 paisa and a coconut and said, “You have become the Guroo.” And whoever Guroo Nanak bowed to, sangat bowed in front of that person twice as much.

Sarna: So exactly the same thing happened.

Bhangar (smiling): This is the reason why even after having some differences in our way of thinking I still used to say that Guroo Nanak is an enlightened soul. I have always believed that Guroo Nanak’s Guroo was Lord himself. He would only bow in front of such a person who he enshrined with his own soul. Prashan Ji, you said it accurately, Dhan Guroo Nanak! (Staying silent for a few moments) So has Guroo Angad Ji taken care of Sangat’s adobe and care, and of traveling to different lands to spread values of Sikhi, just like Guroo Nanak?

Hearing this, Prashan’s eyes became full of tears and his lips started throbbing and his voice stopped.

Bhangar (with tenderness): Prashan Ji, is everything at ease? Why are you crying? We have sorrow of separation as well, but Guroo Nanak’s absence must be really depressing his sangat. Why wouldn’t it be, his teachings were of devotional worship and he was an avtar of devotional love and thus he preached such a way. But Prashan Ji, why did you start crying on name of Guroo Angad? Is everything okay?

Prashan: Everything is okay, Guroo Angad is jot of Guroo Nanak, but he has disappeared. He has to be present in this physical world as he has to carry the load that Guroo Nanak put on his shoulders but no one knows his whereabouts. Sangat is becoming impatient without his darshan. I am not disappointed, but I do come at this position because of sorrow.

Bhangar: (surprised and sorrowed): But why so? He has probably gone to a remote place because of the sorrow of Guroo Nanak’s separation. (Eyes closed in meditation) Has anyone claimed possession over Guroo Nanak’s site? And if so, Guroo Angad being one of the superior qualities, as you mentioned, probably went to a solitary place to show that he has no anger at anyone and nor does he have attachment with anything. Is Gurooship thought of something so ordinary that anyone can take possession of? Bhai Prashan Ji! One who made Guroo Nanak happy, how could he have a bit of yearn for anything?

Prashan: You are a scholarly yogi and can foresee future, thus your thoughts are correct. He had such immense love for Guroo Ji that he could not even remain separated from Guroo Ji for an instant. But after he got established on Guroo Nanak’s position, Guroo Nanak’s sons did not show any love towards him and thus Guroo Baba [Nanak] sent Guroo Angad away from Kartarpur. Guroo Nanak visited him a few times before leaving for Sach Khand but he didn’t let Guroo Angad come back to Kartarpur, just so he could stay away from this jealously [of Sri Chand].

Bhangar: So where did Guroo Angad stay?

Prashan: At Khandur. There is a town named Bilaasa on the road which goes to Lahore after passing the river Bilaas.

Bhangar: And now he is not there?

Prashan: No one knows. Sikhs have also gone looking for Guroo Ji at the village of his in-laws, along with Khandur, Hari Kay, and Matte di Saran, but no one could find any clue of where Guroo Ji is.

Bhangar: (staying in attention for a while) Prashan Ji! Whoever Guroo gave his seat to cannot remain hidden for a long time. Please don’t be disheartened. We also have to get dharshan of Guroo Nanak’s chosen one and put him through our examination. Some just take the word, but others have to valuate. What do you say Prashan?

Prashan: As you say! We are Sikh and you are a Yogi. So you can valuate if you like. One who could pass Guroo Nanak’s exam is sure to pass all others.

Bhangar: Well said! If you do hear of anything please let us know, and if we happen to find out anything we will send our message to you. Being in sight of highly spiritual people help in achieving enlightenment. (Staying silent for a while) So Prashan Ji, please tell us of the condition of Guroo Ji’s sons. One is a family man and the other is a Yogi like us. But his way of life is of staying attached with Naam and Bani, just like Guroo Nanak.

Prashan: When Sangat comes from abroad, it tends to go to Kartarpur naturally. And whoever goes there, they think of Sri Chand as the new Guroo. Everything there is just the way it was at Guroo Nanak’s time. Guroo Angad only took the ‘jot’ along with him. But when people find out that Guroo Angad is the actual Guroo, they become disheartened and leave after in vainly trying to look for Guroo Ji.

Bhangar: No wonder there are rumors that Sri Chand is the new Guroo.

Prashan: Yes, this is the reason why. Yesterday people heard this from my house and came to question me.
