Chapter 3 - Sangat in Search
The river of Ravi is flowing in magnificence between the five rivers of Punjab. It makes turns but continues to flow day and night towards its master Iravati River. Whether it overflows or flows low, the blessed river of Ravi is everlasting. From the east side of the river, came out a tall individual with glorious sight, after taking bath in the river. Some men had been waiting for him. When he turned around to step out of the river, all these men bowed with great respect and this person bowed back as well. One of those awaiting persons passed a chaadraa (wrap around) which he took and wrapped around himself. Then they passed him a double knitted towel of jute to wipe his wet body. He took the towel but instead of wiping his body he questioned and asked, “The sight of feet of blessed souls are received with great fortune, is everything at ease that you have come here so early at dawn?”
Bhai Dheero – Almighty has been graceful upon us. We have come to get the blissful sight of your feet, please wipe your body and put on your attire. We have come to sing the glories and virtues of our beloved Lord with you. Please put on your clothing at fast because the flow of air is very chilling.
At a distance there was straw spread on the land where that person seated after wiping his body and wearing his robe. Other men also accompanied him and sat on the straw. He then welcomed them and asked, “So how do you come here, my beloveds of Guroo Nanak?”
Ajeeta: We have come here in search of Guroo Nanak at your door. We have not been able to find the whereabouts of person who Guroo Nanak turned himself into. The sangat who comes [to get darshan of Guroo Ji] has to return like thirsty deer which are not able to quench their thirst. Neither us nor those people are able to find any clues of where Guroo Ji might be located. The one with the magnificent sight has isolated himself at some place with the image of Guroo Nanak in his heart. Guroo Nanak applied the mark of Gurooship on his forehead.
Buddha (sighing with tears in eyes): Guroo Nanak’s path is of Bhagti, and Bhagti’s door is of humbleness. When Guroo Angad inclined towards Guroo Nanak with humility, the humbleness of the whole world sited in his lap. Becoming the Guroo outcomes to praises and that Guroo Nanak’s beloved – avtaar of humility – Angad, did not want any worldly honor. There was no one else like him so Guroo Nanak made him the Guroo even though he was not willing. But this command had come from the nether world, and it was a play of Lord himself, in fact the most amazing one. [Nodding his head] Yes Gurmukho! In reality they were both two different bodies with the same soul. One was the complete Guroo and the other was his Sikh – the complete Sikh, and both were absolute. One however became the giver, and other became the receiver. This was plotted by Almighty Lord himself; as he had to present the sample relationship of the Guroo and the Sikh to the strayed public and thus he portrayed it. Guroo Nanak was an enlightened soul which now Guroo Angad Ji posses. They played this game: which we now watch, as both have disappeared. [While Baba Buddha Ji was speaking, a couple of those men standing there fell to the ground in grief]. He [Guroo Nanak] disappeared in Guroo Angad’s heart and no one knows where Angad has disappeared – [perhaps] in Guroo Nanak’s lappet. Wishes, wishes of both of them! [Nodding his head] We are just their Sikh, what strength do we have in front of them? Our role is to stay in their will (razaa) by placing our forehead on their feet! Razaa, Razaa, Razaa! (Eyes closing).
Bhai Dheero: Respected Jio, if both were going to disappear, then what was the use of passing the Gaddi (seat), the Gurooship mark, bowing, and appending us all to their feet, why after attaching us to their robes? Isn’t there supposed to be a reason behind all this?
Buddha (Eyes opening): The only reason was to keep his light lit because he was leaving this temporal world. Just so the light for the moths does not get out of sight.
Saida: Guroo’s wills are totally honored, but the moths are now in darkness, now who will save them from wandering?
Sadharan: Whom Guroo Nanak blessed has the power of taking care of those.
Ajeeta: But the one with the power has left everything aside.
Buddha: He has left everything but has not used any of his power. Only those are complete do not use powers even after having them. Don’t we call complete people free from care?
Ajeeta: Only a blithe can care for the minds of these people.
Ajeeta: Then why isn’t he?
[Bhai Veer Singh Ji is not introducing a new character here; he is most probably referring to Baba Buddha Ji as Baba now]
Baba: He is.
Ajeeta: But we don’t see it.
Baba: “But we don’t see it” is his indifference. He still loves them; this is his method of caring for those people. He is sitting somewhere absorbed in His love, this is his indifference. rMig hsih rMig rovih cup BI kir jwih ] prvwh nwhI iksY kyrI bwJu scy nwh ] He is being careless and absorbed in the love of his Beloved. Everything else is not liked by him.
Ajeeta: Correct, but Baba Ji, what about the Sangat which comes to the door of this Beloved in search of liberation. They are sangat of the Lord. Care for the Beloved and those who seek the sight of that Beloved are the same.
Baba (First smiled, then closed eyes, and then reopened them): Ardaas is our only support. Only ardaas is the bridge that can carry the separated ones across the river. Let us attach ourselves to ardaas. One alone is a Sikh, if two come together they become Saadh Sangat, company of the holy, and if five are together, God himself resides in them. Let us get together as five and do ardaas in front of our beloved God and then move on [in search of our Guroo Ji]. Ardas will take us to the one who listens to everyone’s prayers.
After saying this Baba got up, so did the others, and while joining hands Baba said: -
“Oh Guroo Nanak! Sangat is being restless; your beloved ones are in misery, those who are attached to you are missing you, please show your mercy, come and bless us with your sight. After changing your temporal body to another beautiful one you have disappeared. Oh Guroo Nanak, please do not stay hidden from us. Your Sikhs have started looking for you, please show them the path, and take them where you have lit your light. Oh caretaker of this and the after world! The colored one in love of the Lord! Show the path and take us where you are. Dhan Guroo Nanak! Dhan Guroo Nanak!”
Baba: Let’s go back to the lodges now and prepare to leave. Eat the food and get ready. Yes Gurmukho! Let’s contemplate on the Lord and he will take us towards himself.
