Brother of Shaheed Bhai Gurcharan Singh and Husband of Shaheed Bibi Gurnaam Kaur,
LUDHIANA, PUNJAB - Bhai Mohkam Singh, the tireless Sikh activist who was the brother of the Shaheed Bhai Gurcharan Singh, and husband of Shaheed Bibi Gurnaam Kaur, unexpectedly passed away last week at his in Ludhiana.
Bhai Mohkam Singh’s brother Bhai Gurcharan Singh was one of the 13 Singhs killed during the Neo-Nirankari attack of Vaisakhi 1978 at Sri Amritsar. In 1993, his wife, Bibi Gurnaam Kaur, was abducted by henchmen of SSP Ajit Sandhu and subsequently ruthlessly tortured and killed in detention.
Bhai Sahib’s father, Sardar Daleep Singh, was a close acquaintance of Bhai Randhir Singh Ji Narangwal and Giani Gurbachan Ji Bhindran, and on many occasions both visited their Ludhiana residence during the 1950’s and 1960’s.
During the 1970s to 1990s, Bhai Sahib’s family was one of the main pillars of Akhand Kirtani Jatha activities in Ludhiana, especially during the annual Smagams for the Parkash Utsav of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji.
Bhai Sahib’s saintly mother, Bibi Narain Kaur, who is currently around 105 years old, lovingly taught him and his three brothers, and three sisters, to recite Gurbani competently at a very young age. Through the efforts of their Gurmukh Mata, the entire family was well known for being very eloquent and proficient Akhand Pathees, and actively partook seva in countless recitations.
Bhai Mohkam Singh could easily sit for 6-8 hours during his Akhand Path Sahib recitation, un-interrupted. On several occasions, he had listened to an entire Akhand Path Sahib in a single ‘chaunkraa’ (sitting).
During the turbulent 1980s and ‘90s, Bhai Sahib offered open support to the families of Sikh activists and freedom fighters who were being hunted and persecuted by the Indian authorities. His home became a refuge, and shelter for those who were being victimized during those dark times.
Due to this support, Bhai Mohkam Singh was framed on six different charges by the Punjab Police, and one additional charge by the Delhi Police, and spent almost a decade in Tihar prison alongside other Panthic sevadars such as Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh Ji, and Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar.
Even during the darkest days in prison, Bhai Sahib kept his strict Rehat regimen of Nitnem and Amrit-Vela and would recite Kirtan and Gurbani endlessly for hours in the sangat of other Gurmukh detainees.
In 2001, Bhai Sahib was finally exonerated from all charges framed against him consequently released. Since his release, he had been living at his Ludhiana residence and also taking care of his elderly centenarian mata ji.
Bhai Sahib had spent many years serving on the 11-member executive panel of Akhand Kirtani Jatha, but in 2008 resigned in protest of the dubious politics that were taking place in Jatha circles after the departure of Bhai Surat Singh (Puran Ji).
In recent years, Bhai Mohkam Singh had openly criticized the 11-member committee of politicians that had commandeered the Akhand Kirtani Jatha and various registered trusts for failing to disclose the accounting of the funds they had been collecting for the last several decades.
Although he had distanced himself from the political leadership of current day Akhand Kirtani Jatha, he continued to keep close association with Jathedar Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji Kala-Sanghian and other Panthic minded Gurmukhs who understood that religious organizations cannot survive when politicians and unscrupulous individuals are allowed to take at their helm.
Bhai Mohkam Singh also openly spoke against heretical elements in the Sikh community, including Rozana Spokesman editor, Joginder Sawhney, and Ragi Darshan Sinh who have questioned the authenticity of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib and the Sikh Rehat Maryada.
Bhai Wadhawa Singh Babbar summed up Bhai Mohkam Singh’s tireless seva and devotion with the following eulogy:
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫਤਹਿ।।
ਨਾਮ ਰੱਤੜੇ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਰਸੀਏ, ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਪੁੰਜ, ਪੀੜਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਸੀਹੇ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਦੀ ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਤ ਭਾਈ ਮੁਹਕਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਚਲਾਣਾ ਕਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ । ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਅਸਹਿ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਹੈ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਿੱਠੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਈਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਰਹਿਣਗੀਆਂ । ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੰਮਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਵਿਚਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੌਕਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ । ਜੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਤਾਏ ਪਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਲਿਖੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਸਿੰਘ ਘਰ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਬੜਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਂਭਿਆ । ਦਾਸ ਭਾਈ ਮੁਹਕਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਰਿਣੀ ਰਹੇਗਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਪੋਸਣਾ ਸਕੇ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਤੋਂ ਵਧ ਕੇ ਕੀਤੀ । ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਹੈ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਹਰ ਪਲ ਪੰਥ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਈ ਤਤਪਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਥ ਦੀ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਲਈ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਇੱਕ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਪਲੇਟਫਾਰਮ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਇਆ ।
ਅਖੰਡ ਕੀਰਤਨੀ ਜਥੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ । ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਉੱਤੇ ਢਾਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਮੀ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੱਬਰ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਇਆ । ਖਾੜਕੂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ । ਇਸ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੰਘਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਤਸ਼ੱਦਦ ਕਰਕੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਪਣਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਂਦਿਆ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਤਸ਼ੱਦਦ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਣੇ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਸਾਲ ਜੇਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹੇ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਦੀ ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਲਈ ਘਾਲੀਆਂ ਘਾਲਣਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ।
ਅਸੀਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਵਾਕ “ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਾਹ ਲਡਾਈਐ ॥”ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਰੂਹ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਗਲਵਕੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਲਾਡ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਖਸ਼ਣ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਣ ।
