Amritsar Sahib (KP) — This week, Sikhs around the world have been celebrating the 404th Parkash Ustav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The first parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was performed by the fifth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji on the 1st of September 1604 at Harimandir Sahib, Amritsar. Out of respect for their Guru, Sikh people across the world have been celebrating this festivity with great pomp.
In the holy city of Amritsar on September 1st, the 404th anniversary day of the Parkash Ustav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Sikh followers gathers to take part in a nagar kirtan. Led by the Panj Piaras, this event began from Ramsar Gurdwara where followers walked through Ramsar Road, Chowk Krori, Chowk Baba Sahib and Baba Atal Gurdwara. The nagar kirtan's final destination was Darbar Sahib. While Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was seated majestically on a golden palanquin, followers respectfully accompanied Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and enthusiastically chanted Gurbani hymns such as "Guru Maneyo Granth". Religious organizations, gatka groups, and the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee also took part in celebrating and honoring this important day.
In New Delhi, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee also celebrated the 404th anniversary of the First Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Parkash Ustav anniversary was celebrated on September 1st at Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib.
The procession began early in the morning with the recitation of the Gurbani hymns Sukhmani Sahib and Nitnem (Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Swayaaey, Chaupey Sahib, Full Anand Sahib). After Gurbani hymns were recited, Gurbani Kirtan (Asa Di Var) was performed by the Ragi Jathas of Bhai Manohar Singh and Bhai Gurinder Singh. Also, langar was organized by the the Shiromani Gurdwara Sewadar Committee. Vice President Darshan Singh of the sewadar committee advised Sikhs to remain steadfast with the Rehat Maryada by following the teachings of the great Gurus.
Cities in the Western Hemisphere also took part in this auspicious anniversary. Throughout Canada, there were many celebrations. In Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, approximately 10,000 Sikhs took part in a nagar kirtan assembled for the celebration of the 404th Parkash Ustav. The Nagar Kirtan started from the temple on Blueridge Drive to Rotary Stadium in which it followed the same route back to the gurudwara. During this route Gurbani Hymns along with speeches were performed.
In Winnipeg, 4,000 people took part in a parade which took place in downtown Winnipeg. Kuljit Singh Bhattal, part of the Sikh Society of Maitoba and one of the main organizers of the event, explained its importance and significance. “It’s the anniversary of the completion of our holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. It celebrates our identity and our religion,” Bhattal said. He further mentioned that the beliefs and practices of the Sikh religion were given by the Sikh Gurus, and the last human Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, told adherents that no more Gurus would be born after him. Instead the tenets of the religion would be contained in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The event, which was led by the Panj Piaras began at 1 pm and lasted until 5 pm. The parade started and ended in a gathering at Memorial Park.
In Los Angeles, the Parkash Ustav anniversary was celebrated with grandeur at Gurdwara Lankershim on September 1st. This elegant event began with the Akhand Kirtani Jatha of Los Angeles performing kirtan of Asa Di Var. Shortly after the Akhand Kirtani Jatha's lively spirited performance, several Raagi Jathas and youth groups performed Gurbani Keertan.
