Toronto, Canada (KP) - On January 26th of 1950 the so-called constitution of the Indian Republic finally came into effect. It is this very constitution that classifies Sikhs and other minorities simply as 'Hindus'. Even today, it fails to recognize the separate and unique identity of the Sikhs who have sacrificed so much for this purported democracy's freedom.
For Indians, January 26th is known as 'Republic Day'. It is the day that they proudly wave and fly their tri-colored flag, without realizing that this flag bears the burden and responsibility for the blood-shed of thousands of Sikhs who were tortured, killed, and massacred over the last several decades. These were the very people whose sacrifices gave India its independence from the British.
Instead of waving and flying this symbol of repression, the 'taranga' (tri-color) of the Indians is openly despised by the Sikhs. The 'proper' treatment given to this standard of disgrace can be seen at the various protests and rallies organized by the Sikh community.
Here are some images of the treatment given to the 'taranga' at a recent rally organized by Toronto's Panthic organizations outside a 'Republic Day' function held near Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Further details and videos of the rally will be published in next week's edition.
