Sukhbir Badal now an Amritdhari, another vote ploy ?
Friday 5th of September 2008
Panthic Weekly News Bureau

Anandpur Sahib (KP) – Sukhbir Badal, who is currently the President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) finally got himself baptized at Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib. Sukhbir Badal's visit to Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib was kept a secret by party members.

According to officials of the Shiromani Akali Dal (B), taking amrit was a requirement for becoming President of the party and thus it was fulfilled by Sukhbir Badal.  In the past, Bibi Jagir Kaur, former SGPC President, had labeled him a religious person with a proper schedule for doing nitnem banis and held that Sukhbir would take amrit once he fully prepares himself.

The former Chief Minister of Punjab...claimed that the junior Badal was a drug addict and therefore could not qualify to become an Amritdhari.

The idea of taking amrit is however just a stunt to drive away the criticism of rival-political party members who have continued to bash Sukhbir for not being amritdhari, despite being the party president.  Furthermore, it could also be a plan to win votes from amritdhari Sikhs.   Captian Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, ridiculed Sukhbir's actions and claimed that the junior Badal was a drug addict and therefore could not qualify to become an Amritdhari.

On what level, if any, Sukhbir Badal would fulfill his duties as an Amritdhari will be tough to say.  In the past, he has been blamed for keeping relations with the Naamdharis, Noormehal, Sacha Sauda and other ex-communicated cults.  In addition, the Badals are known notoriously for luring votes by giving out alcohol in Punjab’s villages.
