Jalaao display Attracts Thousands to Sri Harmandir Sahib
Friday 14th of November 2008
Panthic Weekly News Bureau

AMRITSAR SAHIB (KP)—Sikhs all over the world celebrated the 539th Parkash Dihaara of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Special celebrations were held at Sri Harmandir Sahib where thousands of Sikhs rushed to have darshan of Guru Granth Sahib Ji and ishnaan in the amrit sarovar. Several prominent political leaders also paid obeisance on the auspicious day to seek blessings from Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

A special part of the celebrations at Sri Harmandir Sahib included a display of the Jalaao—ancient and rare artifacts dating back to the 15th century. This display was inside the sanctum of Sri Harmandir Sahib and it attracted devotes from all over the state to pay obeisance. The display of the Jalaao is only put on for special occasions.

The most magnificent part of the Jalaao includes the gold canopy that is installed over the palki of Guru Granth Sahib. The canopy weighs over 20 pounds and it has to be installed with special care. The peacock shaped canopy includes thousands of diamonds and other expensive ornaments. In addition, the sword of Raja Ranjit Singh attracts the attention of Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike.

The entire Darbar Sahib complex was lit up with decorative lights and fireworks. Special programs were also held at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, Gurdwara Manji Sahib and Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib where famous Ragi Jathas did kirtan seva. Children trained from various Sikh schools also took part in kirtan.
