Baru Sahib (KP) - Akal Academy continued to embroil in controversy after the parents of a student threatened to commit suicide if their ward was not allowed to attend classes at the Akal Academy School located in Sangrur.
Complainant Paramjit Das alleged that her son was expelled from School for not wearing a dastar. The School administration has received complaints twice recently over similar issues. However, the officials claim the reasons behind the expulsion are different. The administrators argued that Nirmal, Paramjit's son, was never officially registered to attend classes at the Akal Academy run school.
Furthermore, the administrators explained that keeping one's head covered while on school premises is a mandatory part of the school uniform. The school allows for non-Sikh students to wear 'rumals' (handkerchiefs) to cover their head, but a number of times recently, the administrators have received complaints from non-Sikh parents who send their children to Akal Academy for education.
According to their official website, Akal Academy is not only a world-class place for education but it is also a spiritual center.
Along with classes at school campuses, parkash of Guru Granth Sahib is also done which requires all attendees to keep their head covered at all times while on the premises.
The simple expulsion will most likely develop into an interesting issue as the Paramjit Das has promised to commit suicide by August 5th if school officials do not apologize. Several media agencies have covered this news with a clear bias against Akal Academy and linking the matter to religious intolerance. One newspaper based in India referred to the matter as "rising religious intolerance in a state that is still suffering the aftermath of more than a decade of separatist violence."
