New Delhi (KP) – Sedition charges filed against S. Simranjit Singh Mann, President, Shiromani Akali Dal (A), were dropped by the Supreme Court this past Monday. Charges were filed against S. Mann by the State Government in the Supreme Court as earlier the Punjab and Haryana High Court had also dropped the case.
The case that was initially filed by the Jalandhar Police was registered under Section 124A after S. Mann and his supporters attended a rally and raised slogans in support of Khalistan and in memory of Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh Babbar.
Since the trial court had initially found S. Mann to be guilty, he appealled to the Punjab and Haryana High Court for justice. There, the case was dismissed, but the State Government filed the same case with the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court overturned the plea by the Punjab State Government and declared that "words don't break homes" as it dropped charges against S. Mann. The Bench was preceded by Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Markandeya Katju.
