Jathedar Appeals for Unity at Gurta-Gaddi Celebrations
Friday 10th of October 2008
Panthic Weekly News Bureau

Amritsar Sahib (KP) – The Akal Takhat Sahib appointed Jathedar has asked Sikhs worldwide not to get involved in any controversies recently sparked in relation to the date of the Gurta-Gaddi of Guru Granth Sahib.  This move has come after the initial appeal to the Sikh Sangat to resist taking part in controversial matters until the Gurta-Gaddi celebrations are over.

Singh Sahib Giani Gurbhachan Singh refused to issue any edict on exactly what date the celebrations are to be celebrated.  This was after the Akal Takhat Sahib management has received concerns from Sikhs around the world to seek clarification on the celebration dates.  According to the Nanakshahi Calendar, the date that Guru Gobind Singh Ji bestowed Guruship to Guru Granth Sahib is October 20th, however Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib and other organizations observe this event on October 30th.

...efforts have been initiated by anti-Sikh elements to distract Sikhs from taking part in the mainstream celebrations at Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib.

Panthic Organizations based in Punjab have condemned the concerns of some Sikh organizations based in foreign countries to inquire about the celebration dates.  As seen from the trend of recently sparked controversies, including the authenticity of Dasam Granth Sahib, efforts have been initiated by anti-Sikh elements to distract Sikhs from taking part in the mainstream celebrations at Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib.

As it has become evident, several pro-Kala Afghana parcharaks, are on the move to raise doubts on the authenticity of Dasam Granth Sahib.  While these individuals are casting doubts in the minds of the Sikh Sangat, they are using the excuse of Dasam Granth Sahib’s parkash at Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib to also deviate respect from this historical shrine.

However, in order to keep the Sikh community together on this issue, the Akal Takhat Sahib Jathedar has suggested that the Sikh Sangat in Punjab and other countries celebrate the event on October 20th and then the Sangat can collectively arrive at Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib for the grand celebrations on October 30th.
