NEW DELHI - The police, fearful that Akali Sikh activists may try to disrupt the Asian Games, have arrested more than 700 of them and mounted sentries on roads into New Delhi, news reports said today.
The arrests, which began Saturday, came after an announcement by the Akali Party that it would send 1,000 volunteers every day to New Delhi beginning Friday, when the games are scheduled to start.
Militant factions of the Akali Party lead a movement d
emanding autonomy for the state of Punjab, where most
of India's Sikh population lives. The police fear an influx of the militants at the games.
Reinforced by patrols from other states, the police put up roadblocks along highways leading into the capital.
