Sangrur, Punjab (KP) - The family of Shaheed Bhai Kanwaljit Singh was honored by many Panthic organizations at the Bhog ceremony held at Gurdwara Nankiana Sahib in the district of Sangrur, Punjab. The wife of the Shaheed was presented with several gold medals, and plaques in honor of her husband who was killed outside of Salabatpura on May 17th.
Gold Medals and Shaheed Bhai Fauja Singh Award
Siropas and awards along with cash/cheques valuing in the hundereds of thousands of rupees were presented to Bibi Parminder Kaur and her family by Panthic organization from Punjab, India, and abroad. Medals of Honor were presented by the Damdami Taksal, Dal Khalsa and Akali Dal Amritsar, and a golden ‘tagma’ (shield) with the ‘Bhai Fauja Singh Shaheed’ award was presented by the Akhand Kirtani Jatha.
Although the Shaheeds family had requested that the ceremony should not be used for political purposes, Akali Dal Badal succeeded in hijacking the venue and limiting the individuals who were allowed to address the Sangat. Security was excessively tight and everyone was searched or frisked with metal detectors outside the Gurdwara Sahib’s front gates.
Besides the Takht Jathedars, only a handful of speakers were allowed on stage, others were not given the opportunity to honor the Shaheed’s family.
Singh Sahib Bhai Ranjit Singh Ji not allowed to Address Sangat
Surprisingly, Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh Ji, who had come to pay his respects to the Panthic Shaheed, was prohibited from approaching the stage. However, Harnam Singh Dhumma, charmain of the Sant-Samaj was permitted due to his pro-Vedanti leanings.
Jathedars Harassed by Singhs for being Badal's Puppets
Near the close of events, young Singhs eventually were able to take control of the stage where they chastised the Takht Jathedars for being peons of Parkash Badal and not resolute in their Panthic stance, forcing the Jathedars to retreat from the premises.
At the conclusion, several Panthic youths surrounded the Jathedar of Keshgarh Sahib and raised slogans against him and Badal. The nervous Jathedar had to be escorted to safety by the Punjab police.
