LAWYERS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNATIONAL FILES PETITION FOR TORTURED SIKH YOUTH

CHANDIGARH, PUNJAB -  Lawyers For Human Rights International (LFHRI) demanded a judicial inquiry into barbaric torture by the Punjab Police on detainee Kulwant Singh, who is in critical condition at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. The human rights organization filed a petition in the High Courts on the tortured Sikh youth's behalf.

Lawyer Navkiran Singh, on behalf LFHRI, has demanded criminal action against the Punjab Police officers guilty of torturing Kulwant Singh while the detainee was being held in Police custody. 

Meanwhile, the Punjab High Court has issued a short notice for August 18th, 2010 for this petition, and directed the State of Punjab to allow free hospital access to Kulwant Singh by his immediate family.

Kulwant Singh is ne of the five Singhs detained by the Punjab Police in the last few weeks. He is precariously hanging on to his life, due to severe Police torture.  According to press reports, he was hospitalized a few days back with grievous injuries. Doctors state that has sustained injuries as he was subjected to electric shocks.

Dr Saurabh Dhanda of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital said that Kulwant Singh, was brought with injuries, which could have led to renal failure. “There were electric shock injuries on his ear and private parts. Kulwant’s stomach also had injuries owing to severe beating with batons,” he said.
