Would you send your kids to this college?
(Video submitted to PW by concerned members of Delhi's Sikh community)
New Delhi (KP) – Influence of Bollywood has crept into the lives of average people to such an extent that it is now nearly impossible to segregate this type of conduct from even the Sikh households. This type of anti-Gurmat influence is growing rapidly and has not spared the Sikh institutes either. These religious and educational institutes which at one time were glorified for instilling core values of the Sikh religion into lives of its students have also fallen into the trap of Bollywood propaganda and illusions.
‘Khalsa’ Colleges are only ‘Khalis’ in name... |
Members of Delhi’s Sikh community have expressed their concerns about such portrayal of Sikh image on public media as it not only besmirches the image of Sikh institutions but also gives a wrong message to the world about the Sikhs. In the offensive video from the Aaj Tak Channel, the female host has done the same by promoting and glorifying vulgar and improper behavior amongst the students, and by making fun of Sikhs in a subtle way.
The host refers to the Guru Tegh Bahadar Khalsa College as ‘Masti ki Paathshala’ (school of mischievous fun) and states that Khalsa Colleges are known for Bhangra, Giddha and ‘beautiful girls’. |
The mentality shown by the student body is very different from the following claim of the college’s website which explicitly states that college is to function as a religious institute.
“Named after the 9th Sikh Guru Sri GURU TEGH BAHADUR KHALSA COLLEGE is a constituent of University of Delhi. It is a co-educational institution established in the year 1951 by Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee to instill ideals of self-sacrifice and service among the youth. It draws inspiration from the life of the Guru who laid down his life in Delhi to uphold freedom of belief and conscience and whose sacrifice and martyrdom for secular ideas are unique in the annals of our country. “
However, just like in the case of managing its Gurudwaras, the Delhi Shiromani Management Committee has also proven that it is not capable of running education institutes either. The video poses many other questions which the DSGMC must provide answers to.
Is the school really functioning to instill the ideals of Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib or the Khalsa?
Is this the image Sikhs want to send about our Gurus or the Khalsa?
If not, what are the administrators of this college doing?
What responsibility does the Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee have?
These are questions only the administration can answer.
